  1. Biographical Information
  2. The Legislature may cut millions in education funding in the next two years to address state budget shortfalls. How should your school district scale back spending?
  3. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all students are expected to meet proficiency standards by 2014. How would you ensure student achievement in your district?
  4. If elected to the board of education, what would be your top priority?
Leo G. Delperdang: There are no easy answers to the problems facing the U.S. public school system. But running away from the complicated details of school funding cannot help the debate. Each line item on the school budget must be reviewed. We may also need to look at overall school hours and days school is in session. Each year, schools seem to start earlier in the fall. Moving start dates to the end of August would also save on building maintenance and air conditioning costs. All avenues must be considered
Leo G. Delperdang: Maize Schools has done a fine job in this area so far. However, there is still room for more achievement. I believe technology is a key factor in providing students with the opportunity for knowledge and growth. I have worked with many schools across Kansas that have sought and received federal grant moneys for this purpose. We need to make sure Maize School District is actively seeking any and all grant money that is available to the K-12 sector.
Leo G. Delperdang: For the immediate term, top priority must be in balancing the Maize School District's budget. However, we need to continue looking a head as the district continues to grow. Children must have the opportunity to learn academically and to participate in athletics. Both are vital paths to learning and developement. My goal is to open the doors to both and encourage children to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
Education/Degrees: Under Graduate Degrees in Electronics Engineering and Business Administration, plus a Masters Degree in Business.
Occupation: AT&T-Southwest, working with K-12 and Higher Education Schools across Kansas.
Community Involvement: Long-Term member of local neiborhood association. Previous member of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Sedgwick County.
Children in school: Two children currently enrolled in the Maize School District.
How long lived in district: Moved into Maize School District in 1989.
Chad Pore: The current state budget shortfalls are forcing us to look at where best to scale back spending while ensuring we continue to maintain a high academic quality. The first decision that has to be made is to ensure the cuts are as far away from the classroom as possible. If cuts have to include things within the classroom it becomes important to prioritize to ensure kids are affected the least. In the end, children learn from good, quality instruction and that needs to remain the focus.
Chad Pore: Hold our district accountable at all levels from the teacher in the classroom to the superintendent and more importantly the Board of Education. The first way to do that is become familiar with NCLB and proficiency standards and how they are measured. It is easy to look at a score in the newspaper and jump to conclusions, but it may not paint the entire picture. I will further learn NCLB and how to fully understand the measurement & hold our staff accountable for ensuring our kids are prepared.
Chad Pore: My top priority has been and will always be "What's best for kids". Sometimes the correct decisions are not the most popular, but I have always believed it is my job to get all the necessary data and make appropriate decisions based off of the data. I am representing the kids of USD 266 and they are the reason we are all hear so my top priority will always be to ensure they get the highest quality of education available regardless of the economy.

Wendi M. White: We should look at all areas of the budget including an overhaul to our transportation system; our contracts with outside vendors should be evaluated and maybe revised or eliminated; re-organize and restructure our current system for supplies and equipment and make it more efficient; become more energy efficient etc. In short, we should try to do everything we can so that teachers can keep their jobs.
Wendi M. White: I believe our Teachers and Administrators are continuing to devise strategies and lesson plans that are helping our students to become successful and meet Standards but I believe that we should teach children HOW to take a test...have an actual class or more time with Counselors so that kids can get over the fear and trepidation. At the end of the day, it is up to the Student and his/her parents to take these tests seriously and prepare for them properly. Equipping parents will ensure success.
Wendi M. White: My top priority is to restore faith...faith in our leadership and faith in our future. This can be accomplished with open lines of communication starting with the Superintendent on down. People want to be heard and they want to be respected and once that happens anything can be accomplished.
