Why are you running?
Why should voters consider you the most qualified candidate? What in your background most prepares you to serve?
What is the biggest issue facing your city, and what would you do to address it? Please be specific.
What other priorities would you have, and how would you address them?
Please state, in detail, your position on open records, meetings and openness and transparency in government.
Jonathan Flowers:
To take part in the community and to listen to the public concerns and help make the community better.
Jonathan Flowers:
I have lived in this community for 28 years. I think some improvements need to take place. I have worked for the City of Haysville for 22 years. I think it best qualifies me for this position. I am also a citizen so I should have a say in this town, on some of the changes that need to take place.
Jonathan Flowers:
Encouraging businesses to come to our wonderful town. We are weak in restraunts, grocerie stores, and it would be beneficial to have a lumber yard as well. This would create jobs and choices for our community and keep our dollars at home in lieu of going to Wichita and even Derby. This would also give our youth a close and safe choice to work while in shcool as well.
Jonathan Flowers:
Due to the out of date utilities at this time, we need to update our sewer, water and streets in some areas as we are growing. We can work this into our city budget so that we would not have to burden the already hard working taxpayers in our fine community.
Jonathan Flowers:
My postion on openess in the records, meetings and the transparency in government is I am all for this. What do we have to hide, in other words. Our community deserves to all we are doing as they are the community and we are there for them. People need and deseve to know where their tax dollars are going. Communication is the key to success.

Derrick Slocum:
I am running to keep the seat for Ward II occupied and to continue working with the council and staff in moving Haysville forward. Also, as a relatively new (appointed 1 yr. ago) and younger member of the council, I hope to bring in new ideas and a fresh pair of eyes to the board’s decision making.
Derrick Slocum:
I have been working in government for the past 5 years in various places as a planner (Riley County, Kansas, Minturn, Colorado and Wichita-Sedgwick County, Kansas). I feel that I have a good idea of the wants and needs of a community as a praticing planner and would like to be a part of the decision making process in the community in which I reside.
Derrick Slocum:
A couple in my eyes would be taxes and business recruitment and retention. One of the main reasons our taxes are so high is due to the lack of business in our city. We need to give our economic development director the tools he needs (i.e. money, incentive packages, property, etc.) to recruit businesses to our city to reduce the tax burden of the residents. However, I do not believe tax breaks should be a part of any incentive package since that is exactly what the community needs at this time.
Derrick Slocum:
Street repairs/reconstruction:Just voted for the pay as you go route; however, if streets deteriorate faster, causing more problems, I will have no problem voting for a bond to repair the streets. My feeling on the pay as you go route is luke warm at best, but I did vote for it knowing we can approve a bond for street repairs at any time if needed.
Appearance: Possibly a plan to improve the appearance of the Grand Street corridor between Marlin Ave. and Main St. An economic development tool.
Derrick Slocum:
I have no problem with open records or transparency in our government. Government is for the people, paid by the people and the governing body is voted in by the people, so the public should have all access to their government. However, I do think that any information obtained should be used responsibly for educational and informational purposes and not used for personal vendettas or personal agendas.
