  1. Biographical Information
  2. The Legislature may cut millions in education funding in the next two years to address state budget shortfalls. How should your school district scale back spending?
  3. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all students are expected to meet proficiency standards by 2014. How would you ensure student achievement in your district?
  4. If elected to the board of education, what would be your top priority?
Mark Burden: Our first approach should be to look for areas where we can generate additional revenue, by seeking out additional help from community patrons and businesses through promotional opportunities and providing them opportunities to contribute services directly to the district. If and when cuts are required, a committee made up of not just administrators and staff, but also parents and students from across the district should be established to identify areas that can be cut with minimal impacts.
Mark Burden: The Circle District already has a good record on achievement test scores, regularly meeting the “adequate yearly progress” requirements and in most cases meeting the “standards of excellence” criteria. Also, we already have a great group of teachers and staff, and as long as our district stays the course by maintaining a highly qualified staff and continues to grow our areas of excellence, our district shouldn't have any issues with meeting the No Child Left Behind Act's proficiency standards.
Mark Burden: Our current superintendent has recently announced her retirement, so the top priority will be finding a strong leader and communicator, who will want to be a part of the Circle community. Another top priority will be to improve communication across our district, by finding new and better ways to communicate with all USD375 patrons. We also need to grow our areas of excellence by continually reviewing curriculums and activities provided to assure they meet the Circle community needs and desires.
