Biographical Information
The Legislature may cut millions in education funding in the next two years to address state budget shortfalls. How should your school district scale back spending?
Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all students are expected to meet proficiency standards by 2014. How would you ensure student achievement in your district?
If elected to the board of education, what would be your top priority?
Dal L. Astle:
Investigate 10 hour school days Mon - Thurs, I agree with the hiring freeze, unnecessary field trips are just that...unnecessary. My daughter did not goto the pumpkin patch this school year and she lived to tell the tale. (she even still loves me) One of the reasons I built my home in Maize district was because of the money invested in our schools and children. We must scale back unnecessary spending, however, we must not overreact and cut certain programs which make our district great.
Dal L. Astle:
This is one of the greatest districts in the state, a reason why me and my wife built our home in this district. We must always be firm, fair and consistent with the students and willing to listen to the parents. I firmly believe parents know what is best for their children. Our job as administrators is not to impose our will or beliefs on students, rather unlock all the doors and allow them to choose which door they walk through. We must hold our teachers to even higher standards.
Dal L. Astle:
First, let me say the majority of teachers and administrators are wonderful people of high quality. However, I believe most people in the district will understand when I say school officials need to mind their own business. If I decide as a parent, lets say, to not attend student conferences, do not bombard me with dozens of "your a bad parent" emails. Top priority for me is to allow parents to decide what is best for their children. I will not pretend to be God, just "Your" BOE member.
