  1. Biographical Information
  2. The Legislature may cut millions in education funding in the next two years to address state budget shortfalls. How should Mulvane schools scale back spending?
  3. Mulvane has started reviewing its facilities needs with a consulting firm. Do you believe the school district needs a bond issue to improve facilities or build new schools? Why or why not?
  4. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all students are expected to meet proficiency standards by 2014. How would you ensure student achievement in the Mulvane district?
  5. If elected to the board of education, what would be your top priority?
Travis Cottrell: I support the direction the district administration has taken to date by consolidating a director position and gathering input from teachers and staff. All positions, activities, and general expenditures not directly related to student achievement and classroom instruction should be reviewed for value. I would oppose any cuts that would result in increased class size for core classes.
Travis Cottrell: While there are necessary facility improvements that will have to be addressed, the development of a comprehensive, long-term plan by the Facility Steering Committee is key in determining the direction the district should take. With the flat student enrollment of the past ten years and the current economy, careful consideration is required of any bond issue put before the taxpayers.
Travis Cottrell: Continued student achievement is best ensured by having highly qualified educators in every classroom that are supported by an effective administration and staff. This starts by ensuring that our excellent teachers, staff, and administrators are retained. I commend the district administration in recognizing this and taking steps to improve retention.
Travis Cottrell: Educating our students to become productive citizens would always be my top priority. I feel I could help achieve this by providing sound leadership and fiscal responsibility through challenging economic times where spending cuts will be required. It is imperative that required cuts do not diminish the educational instruction that is provided to our students.
