  1. Biographical Information
  2. Why are you running?
  3. Why should voters consider you the most qualified candidate? What in your background most prepares you to serve?
  4. What is the biggest issue facing your city, and what would you do to address it? Please be specific.
  5. What other priorities would you have, and how would you address them?
  6. Please state, in detail, your position on open records, meetings and openness and transparency in government.
Michael Conrady: I am running for City Council Ward I because I want the city's business base to grow, but not the taxes. I would like to continue to strive and keep Haysville a place you can feel safe to call home.
Michael Conrady: I don't have any experience; however, sometimes it's better to not have experience because having experience can cause you to become complacent and keep you from thinking outside the box and seeing the whole picture.
Michael Conrady: One of the biggest issues facing the city is the high taxes. Having high taxes makes businesses see the city as an undesirable place to locate to. By using tax incentives to bring businesses to the city it will help grow the business base and offset taxes.
Michael Conrady: Other priorities includes holding the staff the responsible to the citizens they represent, stop wasteful spending, improving streets, and attracting new businesses to Haysille. For staff accountability and wasteful spending I will be asking many questions and following my philosophy of buy what is needed not what is wanted. By trying to lower taxes and giving tax incentives to new businesses.
Michael Conrady: My belief is that citizens have the right to view any information that is public record. As a city government the first and foremost thought is to be honest and open to all the citizens. This will develop more trust between the city government and citizens.

Joe Holub: I am running to preserve the accomplishments we have made in the past four years and to further the progress of the City of Haysville in new housing and business developments.
Joe Holub: I am the most qualified candidate because I have been on the Council and understand the challenges of our future. In my career in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, I worked with small cities in southern and eastern Kansas in the development and implementation of street, water and sewer projects. And yes, that meant working with mayors and city councils.
Joe Holub: Our biggest issue will be the replacement of streets that are going on 60 years old. We have a plan in place, as to the streets in need of replacement. The plan is to pay-as-we-go in the form of gas taxes received each year. This plan will take time. It is my belief that bonding will eventually be necessary because the streets are deteriorating at a highly progressive rate due to sub-base failure.
Joe Holub: My other priorities are replacement of water and sewer lines that are also about 60 years old. This will hopefully be taken care of with yearly funding. Another priority is new sidewalks. This again, I feel can be accomplished with prudent yearly funding.
Joe Holub: My position on transparency in the government is that the taxpayers and citizens have a basic right to be informed of all governmental activities; local, state and at the federal level. We must remain informed to judge those who represent us. In Haysville, we have Channel 7 to inform us of council decisions. We are also fortunate to have a good local newspaper that publishes our legal proclamations and reports on each council meeting in a condensed forum.

The Wichita Eagle invited candidates in some contested races in Sedgwick, Butler and Sumner counties to respond to questions about key issues. You can compare the candidates and their responses side by side, and create your own printable or e-mailable ballot. The responses are largely unedited and presented as the candidates sent them to us.
